Bowman, Richard W. – 704th Tank Destroyer Bn

He entered the service on Nov. 10, 1942 in New York city. He became a Combat Medic and was assigned to the Medical Detachment of the 704th Tank Destroyer Battalion. While in France, a sniper shot the helmet right off his head. Richard was only slightly wounded but it did earn him a Purple Heart. Richard reached the rank of Technician 5th Grade.

Richard returned from the service and married Lillian Elizabeth and together they had two sons. Richard was also the editor of the “Five Star Review” of the 704th TD Bn Veteran’s Association.

The Medical Detachment, 704th Tank Destroyer Bn took care of the wounded soldiers and used a variety of (captured) vehicles to transport them. One of them being a German paymaster truck, another a German Schwimmwagen and even a German staff car.
